2009 Audie Award Winners!

I promise a nice, long chatty post later about what I've been doing during my Blogosphere Break, but first I have to say that, in addition to being a bad blogger, I also really suck as a fangirl. If it wasn't for an email from Phil G today (SQUEE!), who knows when I would have remembered to check the results of last nights Audie Awards! DOH!

Phil Giganteaudiobook- The Dark Highlander by Karen Marie MoningAnyway, note the winner in the Romance book category-- uh-huh, that's right, Mr. Eargasm himself, Phil Gigante, for his brilliant narration performance of Karen Marie Moning's The Dark Highlander (the one with Dageus MacKeltar and Chloe Zanders)!!

Although, as I've said before, they really should have created a whole new Series Narration category so he could win that one too. Right along with Johanna Parker. Oh, have I mentioned that I'm a Phil G. fangirl? Hmmm... I might have had a thing or two to say about him here and here, here, here, here, and here, oh and here, here, here, and here.

Aural PleasuresAs an audio book enthusiast (and in the interest of fairness), I want to congratulate ALL the deserving nominees. But really, there can't be too many other narrators that have fangirl groupies swooning over them, can there?

Here's a few of the categories and winners. For the complete list, go to The Audio Publisher's Association (APA) site (which should have them posted soon) or, as I did, go to AudioFile Magazine's Audies page.

Series Category: Lava Cake - reads like warm Chocolate Lava Cake... à la Mode... sprinkled with nuts (A,A-)
Flame Height: 6"-7" out of 9"

Because of the length of time that’s passed since I read this series and the fact that the Fae lore and intrigue was secondary to the romance, I'd completely forgotten about all the foreshadowing and clues leading up to Moning's more recent Fever series. But more on that when I do my Faefever commentary; for now, I’m going to concentrate on Phil Gigante and his Highlanders.

For those of you that have never read this classic time travel/fantasy romance series, I would suggest that Highlander books 4 (Kiss), 5 (Dark), 6 (Immortal), and 7 (Spell) be read/listened to in order. While Aoibheal, queen of the Fae, or Tuatha Dé Danaan, and her fool/confidante Amadam (Adam Black) do appear in the earlier books, the Keltar Druids story arc begun in Kiss is not dependent on those previous books, but from that book on, the stories do build on one another.

In my previous Highlander commentaries (see index), I’ve proclaimed that Phil Gigante’s eargasmic performances are the perfect mating of story and storyteller and I can’t imagine merely reading these stories from a printed page ever again. In my review of Kiss, I pointed out that “Often, when a man attempts a woman’s voice, it comes off as mocking. However, while no one will ever mistake Phil’s voice for a woman’s, I quickly was no longer conscious that a man was voicing the female characters. Yes, he uses a higher pitched voice for women, but there’s something else there too… a softness, a vulnerability… something… that does not scream “man mocking woman”.”

However, keep in mind that, as a man, even Phil G’s talent can only produce so many believable 20-something female voices. So in Immortal and Spell he differentiates the wives from previous books by giving them each a very slight accent and changing the cadence of their speech patterns. If you don’t listen to the books back-to-back you probably won’t even notice, but it was an exceptionally sound solution since it allowed Phil to retain the quality of his female voices.

Now the men’s voices? OCH! I’m pretty sure that the scenes where they are all together should carry embedded warnings, “Warning: the following scenes carry serious risk of Death by Eargasm”! Drustan’s voice is my favorite- Gigante uses a deep growling brogue imbued with Drustan’s complete confidence in himself. Dageus’ Scottish brogue by way of Liverpool reflects his mischievous, “Hail fellow, well met” personality- when he isn’t possessed by a baker's dozen of ancient evil Druids, of course. Phil gives Adam both a sidhe and a human voice that never quite loses his seductive sidhe arrogance. Cian’s sexy brogue contains an underlying anger and iciness which, considering he’s been trapped in a mirror for hundreds of years, seems more than appropriate, but gradually one can detect a subtle thawing and underlying warmth.

In addition to bringing the main characters alive, Phil G. puts just as much effort into making the secondary characters seem real to the listener. Whether voicing an old woman, one of the villains, or even a child, Phil plays his voice like the fine instrument it is to make every character distinctive and believable.

Phil takes his performances one step further than just using his gifted voice abilities; he adds special effects that bring the story to life. For instance, if someone is on the other end of a phone conversation, the other side of a door, or in the case of Cian, on the other side of a mirror, Phil uses a special effect that makes it sound like their voice is coming from that source. Wait till you hear the effect he uses to portray the power of the Druid “Voice”—it’ll make the hair on the back of your neck stand up the first time you hear it.

Those entertaining extra touches, what Phil once referred to as that extra “inch”, mean that Phil Gigante’s performances are not to be missed!

So why doesn’t this series end up in my Crème Brûlée category? Phil G.’s performances certainly do, but the stories themselves are Peanut M&Ms. They are highly enjoyable escapist fantasy romance that became auto-buy book crack for me. But KMM’s heroines are just too similar—nearly identical overachieving virgins—and her love scenes are just a bit too over the top dramatic. My inner 12-year-old giggled more than once in embarrassment for poor Phil, and I have to wonder just how often he busted up with laughter. However, I think listening to the books back-to-back like I did just spotlighted those flaws even more. But nonetheless, thanks to Phil Gigante, the Highlander audio book series remains firmly on my list of all-time favorites.

I Am So Screwed...

I think I might need an intervention for my serious addiction. It's taken over my life. Here I am with a shitload and a half of work to do, and do you know what I spent 2-1/2 hours doing online today?

I spent that time desperately trying to find someone... ANYONE... who could sell me the next audio book in Karen Marie Moning's Highlander series-- the one with my favorite Nathan Kamp cover picture-- that I am well aware DOESN'T RELEASE UNTIL JANUARY 20TH!!

Don't these people understand??!!! I've rationed out The Highlander's Touch that released in November, TRYING to make it last until Kiss of the Highlander was released. I tried, I really did. But it's all Phil Gigante's fault. I can no longer work without listening to his narration. And I have soooo much work to do right now... HOW CAN I GO ON WITHOUT MORE OF PHIL'S SCOTTISH BROGUE !! I NEED it... I'm in a complete panic because I'm going to have to wait to hear him again.

None of the downloadable sites will sell it until the 20th. And I found two places that said they had the CDs in stock and would ship in two to three BUSINESS days. Not good enough. I was even willing to pay double the cost of the audio book to have it overnighted to me, or at the latest, here by Monday. But n-o-o-o-o-o-o-o, I'd be lucky if they even shipped by Monday. Yes Phil narrates other author's books. Yes, KMM has the Fever series in audio. But it's not the same... not anywhere NEAR the same. And it's the first MacKelter story!! AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH! *sob*

The Highlander series is so delicious, and hearing it through Phil Gigante's narration, with Nathan Kamp's cover pics sitting right on top of my monitor, allows me to physically be here in this world working diligently, but mentally I've actually been carried far, far away.

God, I feel like a crack whore who will do anything to get her next fix. I can't concentrate on work... all I can think of is how much I miss hearing those Highlander stories delivered in that swoon worthy voice.

Damn you Phil Gigante! Damn you Karen Marie Moning! Look what you've done to me!

It's been so many years since I read this book, that with the exception of the fae fool, Adam Black, and Aoibheal (pronounced Ah-VEEL), the fae queen, (who reappear in subsequent Highlander stories) this might as well have been a new release. Yes, the story has a few flaws that stretch credibility, but just go with 'em, okay? It's a swoon worthy Highland/Time Travel/Fantasy Romance.

And Phil Gigante's narration? Oh my! He does such a good job with the female voices that I was quickly no longer aware that the narrator was a man. And what he does for the male voices... *sigh*... his Scottish brogues gave me aural eargasm after eargasm!

Jaci Burton and C.J. Burton - Out of the Darkness (Ellora's Cave)

Category: Peanut M&Ms - mmmm...devour... sigh... then reach for the next one. My daily dose of Insanity-B-Gone. Most books fall in this category. (A-,B+,B)
Flame Height: 7" out of 9"

Werewolf and Vampire clans versus the human government. A government shrink that helps interrogate captured paranormal beings. She doesn't know she's the first werewolf/vampire hybrid. And last but not least, a werewolf/vampire (m/f/m) menage!

This book was written a couple of years ago and the world building and timeline could use a little tightening up, but that doesn't stop the flow of the story. The basic premise is intriguing with the added strength of interesting characters (even the secondary ones were well developed), and sizzling erotic scenes.

I sure hope that one day soon Charlie (Jaci's husband) and Jaci's muses nudge one another and say "So, ya wanna canoodle again?" because I would really like to read more stories set in this world.
Piquant Opines: RT, JERR, RJ,

Pepper Espinoza - Surrender's Edge (also Amber Quill Press and Amazon)

Category: M&Ms - a bit lighter and/or not quite as satisfying as Peanut M&Ms, but still Oh-So-Enjoyable! (B,B-,C+,C)
Flame Height: 8" out of 9"

This stands out because it gives us a little something different from most M/M/F menages. Geoff is devastated when he discovers that the two people he loves most in this world, his friend and business partner, Nash and their receptionist, Sunny, are secretly in a relationship. Turns out they each had their reasons for keeping it a secret- Sunny knew Geoff was in love with Nash and Nash knew Geoff was in love with Sunny and neither wanted to hurt him. What Geoff doesn't realize is that they are both in love with him in addition to each other. What ensues is Nash and Sunny seducing Geoff and convincing him they CAN have a triad relationship.
Piquant Opines:

Sabrina Jeffries - Beware a Scott's Revenge - School for Heiresses 3

Category: Peanut M&Ms - mmmm...devour... sigh... then reach for the next one. My daily dose of Insanity-B-Gone. Most books fall in this category. (A-,B+,B)
Flame Height: 6" out of 9"

A Regency AND a Highland Romance combined! *swoon* Has a twist I never saw coming. I never read the rest of the series, yet had NO problems reading this as a standalone. And the inside cover pic? YUM!

Anchor and Storm by Kate Poole

Kate Poole - Anchor and Storm - Ellora's Cave
~
Category: Lava Cake - reads like warm Chocolate Lava Cake... à la Mode... sprinkled with nuts. (A,A-)
Flame Height: 6" out of 9"
~
From EC: "Edgar Armstrong, Earl of Callander, had not given much thought to marrying and producing an heir…until he meets Emily Sinclair. When their easy companionship grows into love, they learn that Edgar's progressively debilitating disease could be passed on to his children. As their joy turns to despair Edgar finds a solution. If he can't get her with child he knows just the man who can. But will Emily agree to his plan?
~
Angus MacNeill, Lord Callander's groom, thinks Emily married Edgar for his title, his money and the security he can give her. And when Edgar approaches him with a very unusual request Angus questions his master's motives. Still, it doesn't stop him from accepting Callander's terms — it's the only way he can be with Emily, even if only until she conceives.
~
Deeply in love with Edgar, Emily will do anything he asks of her. But she never suspected he'd ask something like this! Despite Edgar's reassurances she worries that his plan could destroy their marriage rather than strengthen it. And when she makes her choice, Emily wonders if there's room enough for two men in her heart — and in her bed."
~
I wish I could remember who recommended this book to me, because I want to thank them. I bought this book because it was historical and a menage, but it turned out that this was one of the most beautiful love stories I've ever read. Even the erotic scenes transcended sex and became some of the most emotionally exquisite scenes I've seen.
~
Underlying all of this book was a sadness in each character. A great sense of loss. Edgar felt the betrayal of his body as it slowly gave away on him, then felt the loss of the years he longed to spend with his beloved Emily. Highlanders displaced after Culoden and the Jacobite uprising, both Angus and Emily felt the loss of their way of life, their freedom, and all that they held in their hearts. The love the three of them unexpectedly find, is their one shining prospect to gain peace for their souls.
~
While Anchor and Storm does not end with a traditional HEA, the bittersweet ending left me with a feeling that their three lives had followed the course that was meant to be, they were fated to be together if only for a finite amount of time, that there could have been no other ending to their story.
~
Thank you, Kate Poole. The chance to read a story as beautiful as Anchor and Storm is a major reason why I read Romances.
~
(BTW, if anyone knows the address of Kate Poole's web site/blog, please let me know because I've been unable to find it)
~
Update: In her response to the fangirl email I sent her, Kate says she is currently working on getting a website or blog up. She's also planning on attending next year's RT Con in Pittsburgh- I'm looking forward to meeting her.
~
Update: It was Jess and Natalie who pimped this book on Lora's board right after it was released. Since then, a lot of us over there either have it on our TBP/TBR lists or have read it and love it as much as I do. I think we've now even convinced at least one non-historical reader to buy it!
